Games, Cakes, Favors and Themes It's easy to find toddler birthday party ideas because toddler birthday parties are the easiest of all the parties to plan! Yes, you read that right!
You may be asking yourself, "How can planning toddler birthday parties be so easy, when the toddler rearing years are not?" Here's why:
Toddlers will have fun with even the simplest games and activities, but you need to follow some basic principles for success. See Toddler Birthday Party Games to learn what works and why.
Snack type foods are the best. Stay away from foods that could pose a choking hazard such as hard candy, peanuts, grapes, etc. Many times you can find small cookies or crackers to match your theme, such as Dora shaped cookies.
Character Theme Cakes Character theme cakes are the way to go for a toddler birthday party. Kids this age are totally into characters that see on T.V. or play with as a stuffed animal or toy (e.g. Dora, Blue’s Clues, Disney princesses, etc.).
Do It Yourself- If you are into cake decorating, Wilton has great character themed cake pans that are wonderful. They come with directions that are pretty easy to follow. I can do a lot of creative things with my hands, but cake decorating is not one of them. However, I did make my son a Blue’s Clues cake from a Wilton cake pan for his second birthday. It wasn’t perfect, but he thought it was wonderful.
Have Someone Else Do It for You- Sometimes it is easier to just pay someone else to make the cake and save yourself a lot of time and effort. Lately, local grocery stores seem to have every character-themes cake imaginable. In fact I have seen some pretty impressive 3-D character cakes at our local grocery store that I could only dream of making.
Sometimes Less is Best Some of the cutest cakes that I have made for my kids’ toddler birthday parties have been the cakes that have taken the least amount of time.
Store Bought Cake Toppers- Another option is to make a homemade cake and use the store bought toppers to decorate your home baked cake. Many, many times I have made a simple iced cake and then bought the theme toppers from the bakery department at our local grocery store or Wal-Mart and put these on top for easy decorating.
Candy Letters- Don’t ever underestimate the
power of the little candy letters you can buy in the baking aisle in
your favorite store. My kids (and husband too!) :) always get so
excited when I use these to create the message on their birthday
cakes.
Use items won at the activities as loot for the loot bags. Usually at this age, parents aren’t too keen on the idea of their little one receiving a bag full of candy. Why not label a loot bag with each child’s name? As the party unfolds, the moms or you can stuff the bags with things that the kids get at each activity.
For example, if you are having a bug toddler birthday party and the kids have a treasure hunt for toy bugs in a sandbox, then put the toy bugs they find into the loot bags to take home.
Let the kids’ creations be their loot. You could let the kids plant flowers in little terracotta pots with little bug shovels. As the kids arrive at the beginning of the party, have another adult label these two items with the kids’ names. This cute little flower and shovel makes a wonderful party favor that the moms and kids will love taking home with them.

SSince toddlers love being around their friends, why not create a keepsake of your child’s friends. Because your toddler can’t read, something with your child’s friends’ pictures on it would be fun to have for your little one to remember his/her birthday.
Before the party, buy a small photo album in your child’s favorite color. You can usually find these at Wal-Mart very inexpensively. With either a paint pen or a Sharpie marker, write on the front of the album, “My 3rd Birthday Party.” Then take a picture of your child in his/her birthday party hat to put on the front page.
Also, try to get a picture of each guest either by themselves or with your child. Stick each of the pictures in the album and label each picture with just the friend’s name. You will be amazed at how many times this little book is brought to you to look at. Very sweet!
If you are doing a character themed toddler birthday party, go
simple and pre-made for your invitations at this age. Usually the
themes that toddlers love are the characters of the shows they
watch on T.V. (Dora, Blue, Wonder Pets, etc.). Your child will love
helping you pick out the invitations online,
and
your child’s fiends will love getting these invitations in the mail.
The family birthday hat tradition- Click on the link to read about this tradition in our first birthday party ideas section.
Family birthday present spot tradition- One tradition that is great for starting at around age 3 is the “family birthday present spot” tradition. All birthday presents can be set out on the fireplace when the birthday girl/boy has gone to bed for the night. Then when he/she wakes up, the presents are waiting there in the morning to open (kind of like Christmas morning). Find a special place in your home to start this special tradition.
If you want to use a party theme for your toddler party, you have lots of wonderful ideas to choose from. See the possibilities at the Toddler Birthday Party Themes page.
Don't panic! Birthday parties for toddlers can be the easiest parties of all to plan and host. Keep it Simple!
