Looking for teen birthday party ideas? Planning a party for a teenager turning sixteen or seventeen is very different from planning a party for a child turning six or seven.
Teenagers have their opinions on what is fun and hip, and they can quickly shoot down a party theme that doesn't fit their personalities. Here are five potential themes, but feel free to bend, mix and rearrange them to fit the personality of your teen.
1. Television Show Party Themes
What television shows does your teen like to watch? Is there a particular show that all of their friends are really into watching? If so, you can make the show your party theme. You may set up games related to that particular show using your own creativity, or play a DVD of past seasons throughout the show. This could even lead up to viewing the season premiere or final episode of the show as a group to end the party. There are lots of game ideas that can go with an American Idol or America's Next Top Model theme, so think of shows that will be easy to turn into a full day of fun.
2. Dance Theme
You do not want your teen's birthday party to have the vibe of an awkward school dance, but you can get all of the girls together and turn a room of your home into a dance floor complete with colored lights. Dancing is a great theme for those who are into dance, but it is great for any girl that wants to connect with her friends and celebrate in a lighthearted, fun manner.
3. Book Character Party Theme
This is obviously not the party theme for all teens, but those who enjoy reading will love it. You can allow the guest-of-honor to dress up as their favorite book character and have all of the adults running the party dress up, or have the servers dress up if that applies to your party. You can also ask guests to choose a favorite book character, imagine how they may dress and do their hair, and come as the part.
4. Movie Star for a Day Party Theme
Why not give your teen the movie star experience for a day? Hire a limo to take them and their closest friends to the mall for a new outfit, and then have them escorted to get a haircut and complete makeover. When they return home or to a party venue have everything set up for a glamorous celebration. Boys and girls can enjoy this type of birthday party theme.
5. The Ultimate Surprise Birthday Party
Another of our favorite teen birthday party ideas for a fun theme is to really play up the concept of a surprise party. Rather than just jumping out from behind a couch and screaming "surprise" you could take the birthday boy or girl to a destination blindfolded. Lead them into the party blind, have them feel around to see what all is there and who is attending. Come up with a fun way to pull off the blindfold for the ultimate surprise. You may even have them open their presents blindfolded, guess what is in each one, and then take off the blinds to see if they were right on any of the gift items.
6. College Party Theme
Has your teen been accepted to a particular college or will they be going off to college soon? You can have a party with a college theme and ask everyone to bring gifts that can be taken off to the dorm room with your teen. You may have a party for a specific college or university, or this can just be a fun general theme that allows your child to accumulate items that will be needed for college life.
With a bit of creativity, you will come up with an exciting birthday party theme for your teen. None of these theme ideas are suitable for every teen, so you have to think about the personality of your teen and the things they like to do with their friends. Allow their own interests to drive your party making decisions.
