Chocolate birthday parties are more than just yummy, they're fun too! Why not have a brown party and focus on the world of chocolate?
For a toddler birthday party , color parties are wonderful. You can tie so many things into the party when you focus on the color. Just think, a red party could be a Clifford the Big Red Dog birthday party, a purple party could be a Barney birthday party, and a yellow party could be a Sponge Bob birthday party. For this page though, we are going to focus on a brown party- a chocolate birthday party. Chocolate birthday parties make a great theme for adult birthday parties too! Just think of all the fun adults would have when everything they eat at the party is chocolate. I know a few moms who would love to attend a friend's party where they could enjoy some chocolate treats.
Here are some great ideas for some chocolate fun.
Making Chocolate Jewelry- This chocolate birthday party activity is a lot of fun, especially for the girls. For this activity, you will need Saran Wrap (other brands of plastic wrap will be too thin and will break), chocolate candy in wrappers (Hershey's miniatures and others like Kisses are great.), curling ribbon ( the kind you finish off packages with that can be curled with scissors), and scissors (optional). This project must be done with adult supervision due to the use of the scissors and Saran Wrap which can be a choking hazard for young children.
To create chocolate jewelry, cut a really long piece of Saran Wrap for each guest. Give each girl approximately 10-15 pieces of wrapped chocolate candy. Be sure not to use bigger packages like the individually wrapped bags of M&M's. However, the small mini M&M's seem to work okay if you fold them in half. Also, give each girl precut strips of curling ribbon. To make the necklace, start by laying the Saran Wrap out flat. Put a piece of wrapped candy in the middle. Wrap the Saran Wrap around the candy so the candy cannot fall out. Secure the wrap on both sides of the candy by tying a piece of curling ribbon in a knot on both sides of the candy. A step that I do to add an extra step for security is to twist the Saran Wrap on both sides of the candy before tying it off with the ribbon. Repeat this process until you have the desired length of your necklace. I usually alternate adding pieces of candy to both sides of the necklace beginning at the very center of the Saran Wrap. When you have the desired length for the necklace, tie the ends of the Saran Wrap into a knot so that the child can just slip it over their heads. If you want to make the necklaces look extra festive, you can have an adult curl the ribbon with scissors. If you don't want to mess with curling all that ribbon, just have the kids tie the ribbon into bows. For any boys you have making necklaces, just cut the ribbon shorter and leave them as knots in between the candy pieces.
Chocolate Dipped Spoons- These are so fun to
make and definitely a favorite at any chocolate birthday party. This
activity is for older party guests. You will need plastic spoons or
inexpensive metal spoons for each guest. Chocolate for melting like
the Wilton candy melts or the type of chocolate you use to make
chocolate covered pretzels at Christmastime. Follow the directions
on the package for melting the chocolate. It usually involves
melting it in a double boiler. Then all you do is let your guests
dip their spoons into the chocolate and place on wax paper to dry.
Be sure to write their names on the handle of the spoon before
dipping so you will be able to tell which spoon belongs to which
guest. If you will be using the plastic spoons, then you need to let
the chocolate cool a little before dipping. I always find great
deals on mix matched metal spoons at our local kitchen stores. In
order to send these spoons home without there being a big mess, just
place the cooled spoons in a cellophane little treat bag. You can
find these at your local craft store like Hobby Lobby in the cake
decorating section.
One thing I would definitely serve is chocolate gravy. What is chocolate gravy? Well, let me tell you. Chocolate gravy is a specialty of my late grandma, Ruth. Every time I went and stayed with my grandmother when growing up, she would make us chocolate gravy for breakfast. When I tell people about this, some people can't even imagine what this might taste like or what it might look like. It tastes and looks just like it sounds. It is the consistency of gravy and tastes like chocolate. Yummy! Imagine eating this with buttered toast! Heavenly! This is what makes grandmas so special. Moms aren't too inclined to serve their children pure chocolate for breakfast, but my grandma had no problem with it at all. Long after my grandmother passed away, I requested the recipe from my cousin. Even if you decide not to serve it at your next chocolate birthday party, try it out for breakfast one morning. Here's the recipe. Enjoy!
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1/2 cup of flour
1 stick of butter or margarine
3 cups of milk
Melt butter in skillet. Stir in flour and cocoa. Add sugar and milk. Cook over medium heat until thick. Serve over hot biscuits or buttered toast.
Now that I am older and know a thing or two about cooking. To me it is very similar to a homemade chocolate pie recipe that is just not cooked quite as long.
Please remember that if you are having a
toddler birthday party then the mothers aren't going to think to
highly of their child being fed so much chocolate. Just use your
best judgment according to the age of the child. Maybe for young
children you could limit your food to chocolate cake, chocolate ice
cream, and chocolate milk. Be sure to let the parents know that your
brown color party will consist of some chocolate treats just in case
a mom would like to opt out of the food for their child. Also
remember that many store bought chocolate treats are made in plants
where they may have come in contact with peanuts. Allergies are
always something to think about when your serving small children.
One great chocolate treat to send home as a party favor is a
personalized Hershey candy bar. There are many places online to
purchase these. However, if you want to save money, you can just do
these yourself. Sure, they may not look as professional as if you
purchased them, but the kids are not really going to care. This is
how I have always made them by myself. First, remove the outer
wrapper of the Hershey bar, but keep the foil liner on. Next print a
design on your computer with birthday clip art and a thank you
message that says something like, "Thank you for coming to my party.
You are a great friend!" You can print these 2 to a page. Then all
you have to do is cut the paper in half and trim in order to fit
around the Hershey bar. Once you have the design and the dimensions
down. The wrapping of the candy bars goes really fast. I have even
done this for the little miniature Hershey bars. Very cute and very
fun! The kids love it!
If you don't want to go through the trouble of making the wrappers, you could attach an invitation to a bag of M&M's or fill a small cellophane party bag with chocolate candy with the invitation inside of the bag.
If you need something really quick and easy, just print the
invitation on tan paper and add some clip art of some yummy
chocolate.
