Butterfly Wings - When your guests first arrive, hand them a pair of butterfly wings to put on. These are nothing more than fairy wings purchased after Halloween or on your favorite dress-up website. If you are working on a tight butterfly birthday party budget, then there is nothing wrong with making the wings out of construction paper and safety pinning them to your guests. If you have boy guests, let them be bumble bees and give them a pair of yellow or black wings. You might also want to make little headbands with pipe cleaners attached. This can be the antennae for either the butterfly guests or the bumble bee guests.
Butterfly Names - After receiving their wings, ask each guest what they want their butterfly name to be. Then write this name on a nametag and stick it on their shirt. If it is okay with the child, call them this name the whole party or every now and then for fun.
Face Painting - After the guests have received their wings and special name, send them on over to the face painting station. Be sure to have a lot of glittery fun pastel face paints to make swirly designs on all of the beautiful butterfly faces. Be sure to also have some black and yellow paint on hand for all of those boy bumble bees!
Flower Hula Hoops - Get some plastic hula hoops and make them look like flowers by taping on big construction paper petals. See which butterfly or bumble bee can hula hoop the longest.
Planting Flowers - A wonderful butterfly birthday party activity that all the kids like is planting flowers in a flower pot. Before the party, buy little terracotta pots. As the guests arrive have an adult or each child write their name on a pot with a white paint pen or permanent marker.
When it is time for this activity, have the kids all sit on a big blanket, tarp or picnic table - a place that can get messy. Set out bags of potting soil and shovels. Have some adults help each child plant small flowers in their individual pots.
When I did this at my daughter's party, we also wrote each child's name on a shovel when they arrived. This way they each had a shovel to take home with their flower pots.
Flower Gathering - Before the party, spread little artificial flowers all over the yard in a different spot than the guests might be playing or doing most of the activities. Tell or read a book about how butterflies drink the nectar from flowers and travel to many different flowers. Give each guest a pretty gift bag or just a lunch sack or baggie. Explain the object of the game. Tell them it is their job to try and pollinate or gather as many different flowers as they can.
As they go to each flower, they are supposed to put the flower in their bags. When all of the flowers have been picked up, then have the adults help the kids count their flowers. The butterfly or bumble bee with the most flowers is the winner. You can make this game more interesting and treat it sort of like an Easter egg hunt. You can make a special mark on one of the flowers, and the person who finds the special flower gets a prize to take home.
Diggin' for Bugs - One of the best butterfly birthday party games is Diggin' for Bugs. Fill a small plastic swimming pool with sand or section off part of your playground of pebbles. Before the party, hide a large amount of plastic bugs and bug or flower rings. Let each child use a small shovel (or their hands) to find as many bugs as they possibly can. Give them a loot bag to put the bugs in so they can take them home, and they'll have a blast with this activity.
Tissue Paper Flowers - These were always so fun to make in school. Why not teach your guests how to make a tissue paper flower? Be sure to have a lot of different colors of tissue paper and green pipe cleaners. You can even find some pretty neat glitter or printed tissue paper in the birthday section of your favorite discount store.
Have fun with the above butterfly birthday party games and activites. And if you don't find exactly what you're looking for in the list above, just use your imagination!
