  • Don't feel pressured to hand make your invitations. Usually those who do this do it for the pure joy of being creative. People who are crafty see this as a fun project. If hand making your child's invitations seems intimidating or way too much to even think about, then use store bought invitations or pay someone else who actually enjoys this type of project to make yours.
  • If you are going to pay someone to make your invitations, be sure to have them send you or give you a sample first. There is nothing worse than paying for something that you are not happy with. This is especially important when you are working on a tight birthday party budget.
  • Even if you don't have your guests RSVP, always include a phone number or email address on your invitation. Never assume that there won't be any questions for you. The most frequently asked question involves what the birthday boy or girl would most like to have or what they enjoy doing. Even though you may be uncomfortable with this, it makes your guests feel that they are truly getting your child something that will be enjoyed.
  • Never send out your invitations too early or too late. If you send the invitations a whole month in advance your guests may forget about the party because too much time had passed. Likewise, invitations that arrive the day before the party won't work very well, because many people will already have plans. A good rule of thumb is to send them out a week and a half to two weeks before the party. This is enough time for your guests to make plans and not forget about your party.
  • Try to give out an invitation that doesn't look like another paper coming home from school. If your child's school lets you give out invitations at school, then always put your invitation in an envelope. Parents are less likely to throw away a paper that comes in an envelope verses one that was just included with all of the papers sent home from school. Sometimes, parents will also just stack papers up on their counter until they have time to look at it. By the time they get around to looking at the stack, your party may be the last thing they can commit to.
  • Always make your birthday party invitation wording as short and to the point as possible.
  • Include your child's name and/or picture at the top of the invitation. Parents want to know who the party is for right away.
  • If you feel comfortable putting your child's picture on the invitation, this is a great way to get the guests excited about coming to your party and excited about the theme of your party. You can do unbelievable things with photo editing software these days.
  • Make sure to include the day of the week with the date of the party in your birthday party invitation wording. This will help your guests be sure not to mix up the days in their busy schedules and accidentally forget your party.
