Follow this birthday party checklist for things to think about before you start planning your next party. Just answer the following questions to help keep you focused and to help you decide what kind of party you would like to have. The following is a list of questions that I always think about and answer before I actually begin planning a birthday party. They are must-answer questions in order to narrow down your choices and get you focused on what is really important to you.

  • How much time do you have to devote to the planning of this party? a couple of months? a couple of weeks? a couple of days? This will determine how elaborate of a party you will be able to have.

  • What kind of party will you be having? a party with food or no food? family or only friends? formal or casual?

  • How long will the party be? one hour? two hours? a slumber party?

  • Who do you want to invite to your party? which family members? which friends?

  • Where do you want to have your party? at home? at a fun place? at a rental room?

  • What kind of cake do you want to have? Will you bake it or will you have someone else bake it? Is there a family member who would love to bake it for you?

  • What type of food will you be serving? Will you make the food yourself or do you need to find a caterer?

  • What present do you want to give the birthday boy or girl? Will you buy it at a store or do you need to order it online? How long will shipping take if you order online?

  • What party favors do you want to give the guests?

  • Do you want to play any games or have any activities at the party? What kind of games? What kind of activities? What supplies will you need for the games and activities? Will you give prizes out to the winners?

  • What type of decorations do you want to have at your party? Do you have to go out and buy decorations or do you have some things at your house that you could use? Do you know anyone who has something you could borrow for the decorations?

  • What kind of invitations do you want to send out? Will they be store bought or will they be handmade? How long do you need to make handmade ones. Will you buy store bought invitations at a local store or will you need to order these online? How much shipping time will you need?

  • Do you want to send thank-you cards after the party? Will these be store bought or handmade?

  • Do you need anything personally for the party? a new shirt? a new dress? your own costume for the party?

  • Do you need help before, during, or after the party? Who will help you? How much will you pay them? Do you have family members that can help you? High School kids make great party helpers!
