When thinking about what type of flower gifts you could give your loved one, you need to think outside of the box. Chances are if your special person loves to receive real flowers, they are going to love getting other types of birthday flower gifts as well.

Here are just a few that I have either received or given as gifts.

Flower Gift Giving on a Budget- When money is tight, and I want to give a friend some flowers for her birthday, I make the floral arrangement myself. Believe me, I have no floral arranging talent at all! However with this easy arrangement, it doesn't matter. First, I purchase or recycle a small bubble vase. I always keep the vases that I receive flowers in so that I can recycle them later. I usually have a few of these hidden away. Next, I go to my local grocery store and purchase a bouquet of pretty flowers. This usually costs anywhere from $6.00-$12.00 depending on the type of flowers that I choose. I then take them home and begin arranging them into a rounded bouquet in the little bubble vase. To do this, you must cut the stems fairly short but all different sizes. You want the middle ones to be slightly longer than the outer ones. When you have it looking the way you want it to, simply add water. For an added touch, I usually tie a pretty shear ribbon around the mouth of the vase and tie a pretty bow. The mouth of the bubble vases that I usually use lend themselves nicely to this. You can also attach a cute gift enclosure card that is personalized to the bow for that added touch. I have never given this birthday flower gift to anyone who did enjoy receiving it.

Candy Flower Bouquets- When I was a teacher, I was always humbled and in awe at the time and thought that went into some of the gifts that I received throughout the years. One gift that stands out in my mind was a candy flower bouquet. I can't quite remember how it was made, but if you are crafty you could probably figure it out. This flower gift was a bouquet made out of different colors of Hershey Kisses. Somehow each Hershey Kiss was attached to a stick that was wrapped in floral tape with added leaves to the stem. These candy flowers were then stuck into a a tall skinny tin can that was pink. There was a floral styrofoam ball at the bottom of the tin so that the flower stems would stand up. For an added touch and to hide the styrofoam, the mom added some green crinkly paper strips to resemble grass. This birthday flower gift was so sweet and thoughtful and not to mention yummy too!

Flowers that aren't from the Florist- Another favorite gift that I love to give is a potted flower or plant that can be enjoyed for a long time. I love cut flowers in a vase, but when they die, you can't enjoy them any longer. Why not give a flower or a plant that can be enjoyed for many months and even years to come? My mom loves to take care of plants and flowers. For Mother's Day, I gave her an airplane plant inside of a snail plant holder. All I did was go to Wal-Mart and picked out a nice size airplane plant. I found the cutest little snail pot. I stuck the plant in the pot and then picked up a cute floral rug for her front door. Before I knew it, I had a cute birthday bag full of cute outdoor flower gifts that my mom absolutely loved and didn't break my budget.

A Flower Gardner's Delight- When my parents lived far away from me and I couldn't be with my mom on her birthday, I sent her the cutest birthday flower gift ever. This is only appropriate for someone who loves to work in the yard and plant flowers. I filled a medium-sized terracotta pot with a pair of gardening gloves, some small flower gardening tools, and a few packets of pretty flower seeds. I then bought a straw hat, turned it upside down and stuck the pot inside the hat. I then laid the filled hat inside a box to be mailed. You can even add some sunglasses and flip flops to the box. My mom absolutely loved this gift. It was years ago that I sent this to her for her birthday, and she still talks about it today.

Notepad and Flower Pen Gift Set- This is one of the cutest handmade birthday flower gifts you can give. First, fill a small bubble vase with marbles or glass stones. Next, make some flower pens. The is how I make them. Buy some inexpensive black pens, some floral tape, and your favorite bushel of artificial flowers. I always use gerber daisies, but any pretty flowers will be just fine. First, cut the flowers so that they each have approximately a 3 inch stem. Position the cut flower onto the pen so that the flower is sitting directly on top of the end of the pen. Make sure you have removed the lid. You will not be needing it any longer. Carefully wrap the pen with floral tape from one end to the other so that the pen is completely wrapped and the stem is no longer visible. When you have 5 or 6 of these flower pens made, stick them in the cute bubble vase that you have prepare. You can jazz up the vase by adding a cute bow to the mouth of the vase as well as using a paint pen to decorate the vase (polka dots, initials, swirly designs, etc.) For a super added touch, why not add a cute personalized notepad to this birthday flower gift?

When giving your flowering-loving friend a gift, why not try one of the above ideas? When you put a little thought into it, you can give a birthday flower gift that is meaningful and is sure to bring many smiles.
